FANS & FAMS – A MUST READ!!!!! – The Good The Bad And The UGLY! The Back Story Behind The Adorable Fuzzy Pup, What You Always Wanted To Know About Puppy Ownership But Were Afraid To Ask! My Puppy aka ~ This Filthy Animal, Don’t Hump Suzie’s Hatchimal! Titles of books I plan on writing as my future career as a starving writer :)
For all new owners, I have carefully put together a folder of information, however I am sure folks get side tracked and perhaps are unable to review the material so since social media is such a wonderful way to reach people, I have some information you should read PRIOR to deciding on a puppy or maybe you want to nix a puppy altogether and opt for that waggly tailed gold fish for your daughter Suzie!
Okay first off when you pick up your 8 week old puppy, they are not house trained. Although they have had several worming’s and had their first puppy shot they WILL need additional worming’s, and shots until around 6 months old! You are taking them to a new environment, some will be scared and some will be chewing the sofa pillows.
The Good the Bad and the Ugly - Here are some helpful yet gross facts:
The Good:
They are adorable!
They have puppy breath, you want to squeeze them, you want to sleep with them… you want to give constant kisses and puppy snuggles and you take a bazillion photos because let’s face it… they are the cutest thing on the planet, right?
The Bad:
Puppies have worms and worm eggs in their system, if they don’t have worms today…. Eggs will hatch at some point (sometimes within hours) and will have worms tomorrow or the next day or maybe not till next week – They are dogs they eat gross stuff when your not looking and will need wormed forever, and will need annual maintenance minimally even as an adult.
Puppies although bouncing furry beings have sharp teeth … although they are still fragile when you take them home they will be exposed to a whole new world of germs this can cause tummy troubles we advise you get your puppy in to see a vet within 72 hours and if anything – ANYTHING seems off call us 24 hours a day we are here to help and guide!
Puppies need vaccines… to prevent illness Don’t go crazy with all the hype and over vaccinate or medicate, but they are living creatures and prevention is key to have a long healthy life!
The Ugly:
Puppies/Dogs poop, they poop a lot and pee!
They Chew - They don’t know your Prada sunglasses aren’t high end puppy chew toys
They will throw up and then eat their throw up (or your daughter Suzie’s throw up), they may even sometimes eat a poop they made! Or poo from your toilet that your 3 year old didn’t flush! Oh and they drink toilet water….
Hmmm they will hump stuffed animals, even the girls will do this too… (people aren’t’ the only ones confused on gender roles!
Did I mention Chewing? They are going to chew on everything, even you and your children….
They are going to “require” discipline and even “time outs” - YOU have to create boundaries and limits or this fuzzy puppy “The Labrador” The Number 1 Dog of All Time (as far as intelligence and kindness) will turn into an 80-110lb uncontrollable monster without boundaries and limits and structure! Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires… whoops… wrong book title…
Although being slightly facetious – I have had calls and texts at 2 a.m. from clients, I welcome them… I realize we have seasoned dog owners and new dog owner families – We love these animals and they can freak us out : ) But again we are here to help… we will hold your hand through the good, bad and the ugly times!
Also, some vets are for “breeders” and some are not… like in the human medical field there are all types of “health professionals” out there… don’t be bullied and don’t make rash decisions, again we are here to help and help in decisions if you’re stuck or maybe question guidance. I am all for “Adopt Don’t Shop” However – I find that families often want a dog that they know and can meet the parents, they know what to expect how big, how loving… how smart… proven health and preventative testing to rule out genetic diseases… There is certainly a pet overpopulation but every reputable breeder I know will take back any puppy/dog they produce, and these dogs would never see a shelter!…. Just be aware some vets may push for early spay/neuter and other unnecessary services.
I encourage all to read the links below – and “favorite” the Dogs Naturally Website! I have most of this information on the website but we are in the world of “NOW” no clicking and searching so here are some valid points and information that I suggest reading. When you decide on a puppy and add this sweet addition to your family, get your pup to the vet, enrolled in puppy classes and hide Suzies Hatchimal!!!! : ) ….
